As is every bride’s dream, the Indian bride typically has two saris! After the ceremony, she’ll usually change into another lehenga. If the bride wore the traditional red lehenga for the ceremony, she may choose a different color for her reception like pinks, golds, blues, oranges, and purples. Some Indian-American brides may choose to wear a westernized wedding dress for their reception to incorporate both cultures into her wedding day.
 
A lehenga is traditional Indian attire worn for wedding celebrations. The lehenga, for instance, is an ankle-length skirt. Usually paired with a bodice and shawl, the lehenga today has a series of possible cuts and silhouettes, such as A-line, paneled, flared, or mermaid. Unlike western wedding ceremonies, brides avoid wearing white, as it’s a symbol of mourning. Instead, they opt for a colorful sari that reflects their region of origin. Typically, shades of red are popular colors as they represent happiness and good luck to the married couple. More modern brides, though, want to stand out and have been choosing other colors like blue, tangerine, green, gold, and coral. The bride is then draped with an extravagant head scarf and a large amount of jewelry.

In comparison, the sari is one long length of fabric artistically wrapped around the body, fitting overtop a bodice and petticoat. Upgrades to saris for the modern era include more modern crop tops instead of the traditional bodices, or corset saris, which use corsets overtop the sari to help keep it in place and give the wearer a lovely shape.
 
When picking out your Indian wedding guest attire, color is an important factor to keep in mind. Guests should try to avoid wearing red, since the bride typically wears red. Guests can wear any other color except for black. However, it's important to note that traditional dress is not always a requirement. While guests should always look for specific dress code requirements on the couple's invitation or wedding website, alternative outfits—like a bright-colored pantsuit or jumpsuit—can be appropriate as well. Guests are invited to be themselves. There is no expectation for you to wear Indian clothes to an Indian wedding. Given the unique opportunity, however, to experience culture in its richest form, guests should consider wearing traditional Indian wedding attire if they feel comfortable.
 
Typically, traditional Indian weddings last for three days. The first day includes a Ganesha Pooja, a Hindu ceremony that takes place at home with close family and friends. The second day is for the sangeet (or Mehendi ceremony), where the bride and groom are joined by their loved ones for an evening dancing and celebrating. This is often when the bride has henna tattoos designed on her hands and feet. The wedding ceremony takes place in the morning on the third day, and is followed by a reception in the evening. Indian weddings may include all of these rituals, or just certain aspects. But in general, guests should dress formally for each ceremony they're invited to.
